Plants Diseases and Pests, You Should be Aware of
Diseases in plants can arise due to high humidity in the growing media, exposure to plants that have been affected by the disease, and lack of antibodies in plants. If this happens continuously, it can cause the plant to lose its performance and wilt. In addition, in the worst case it can cause the death of the plant.
In addition to disease, there are also pests. Pests are insects or small animals that attack plants as food and their breeding place. Plants that are infected with pests will generally cause damage to their leaves, stems and finally decay.
In this article, we’ll be particular using Epipremnum Pinnatum Variegated as our example. However, these pests and diseases can also attack other plants. Each pest and disease attack on specific parts of any plants.
There are several diseases that are commonly found in this plant: The diseases are such as:
- Rotten Leaf
This disease causes damage to the plant tissue of Epipremnum Pinnatum Yellow Variegated. The attack is marked by rotten leaf that secretes brownish mucus with unpleasant aroma. Then the leaf falls off or the hole gets bigger.
This disease is caused by the bacterium Erwinia carotovora.
- Fusarium Rot
This disease develops caused by uncontrolled humidity. From the unstable humidity, the growing medium becomes a conducive living medium for fusarium fungus to thrive. Then the fungus lives and reproduces which then attacks the base of the stem of this plant. As a result, plant growth is stunted and does not produce shoots at all.
Pests in this plant are also quite many. This pest attacks on the leaves and its shoots. On average, these pests eat the leaves and its shoots. Thus, the performance of the plant will decrease.
If the leaf shoots also get eaten by pests, the growth will be stunted. When that part gets eaten by pests, the plant growth will get stagnate and possibly stagnate or dormant.
The followings are some pests that often attack Epipremnum Pinnatum yellow variegated:
- Caterpillar
- Grasshopper
- Mealybugs
- Slug
Plant Disease Prevention
With so many types of diseases or pests that can damage or even kill your plant, you have to be aware of them all. You certainly do not want anything bad to happen to your plant, do you? Then you have to do something about these diseases and pests.
The most appropriate step you can take is to take a prevention. This prevention is of course done before your plants are infected with diseases or pests. You can add your weekly's activity to check plants and spraying pests and diseases.
It must be done routinely to get a satisfying result. We definitely do not know when the pest and disease will come. Is it daylight or night? Is it today or tomorrow? We do not know about it. In addition, we only realize that suddenly when we check it, there are already pests.
By doing prevention, you can anticipate the pest and disease infecting your plants. There are two kinds of pesticide that you can apply to your plants. Both pesticides have contents of their respective functions. These two types of pesticides are insecticides and fungicides.
- Insecticide
Insecticide is a toxic chemical compound that can kill insects or small animals. Insecticide can affect insect growth. This compound can inhibit reproduction and damage the internal organs of insect.
Insecticide substance is liquid. This substance is dangerous for human if it is swallowed. Thus, during its application, we must use gloves and mask.
Insecticide application is by mixing the liquid to water. Then add the mixture to your sprayer. After that, you can apply it by spraying on the plants.
The parts of the plant that have to be sprayed are on the leaf surface, back of the leaves, leaf base, leaf stalks, shoots, and stems. In these parts the pests often lodge and eat them.
You can apply insecticide once a week. You have to routinely provide insecticide in order to prevent insects to come to your plants.
Do not give too much insecticide or overdose. This can also harm the plants. It is better to follow the recommended use on the packaging before the application. In addition, you can also consult with the shop employee where you buy it.
- Fungicide
Fungicide is a chemical substance and compound that can suppress growth, inhibit and kill fungi that can cause disease. In this case, the fungi are fungus. In general, fungus can be a breeding ground for bacteria which then becomes disease.
There are fungi which can harm plants. There are also ones that are harmless. However, although the fungi are harmless, it is better to suppress its growth or kill them. It is necessary to do in order to maintain your plants in good shape.
Fungicide can be in the form of either powder or liquid. Both forms function to kill diseases on plants. The application is the same. You can mix fungicide with water then mix it well. Then you can apply it by spraying it to the plant stems, leaves, then water it to the growing media so that it is absorbed by the rhizome and roots.
In bottom parts or rhizome and roots are quite risky if exposed to disease. This is due to these parts are covered by growing media and we cannot see beneath at all.
You can apply fungicide one a week. When applying it, it is better to not mix it with insecticide. This is because these two chemical compounds contain ingredients that when mixed over time can damage the leaves.
